Abstract
The relationship between humans and conversational agents (CAs) has recently become increasingly similar to human-human relationships through the integration of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI). As individuals are influenced in their thinking and behavior by their relationships, this may result in spillover and/or compensation effects from human-CA relationships to human-human relationships and vice versa. This research-in-progress paper employs spillover-compensation theory to explore how relationships with conversational agents may potentially impact the way we interact with other humans through these spillover and compensation effects. We expect to contribute to theory and practice by extending theories on relationships between humans and CAs, discussing implications for CA usage and adoption, as well as revealing consequences of engaging in a relationship with CAs.
