Abstract
OpenAI´s latest updates reflect a growing trend in GenAI design: enhanced customization, including adjustable conversation styles. While literature distinguishes between social- and task-oriented conversation style, their effect on affective outcomes in collaborative settings remains underexplored. Drawing on Social Response Theory, we conducted an experiment (N=372) to examine how GenAI conversation style influences process satisfaction in brainstorming. Our results show that a task-oriented GenAI leads to higher process satisfaction and, in creative tasks, is perceived as more competent. We identify perceived competence as a mediator and task context as a moderator. Surprisingly, self-reported GenAI experience did not moderate this relationship, but usage-based measures (e.g., ChatGPT usage) suggest a potential effect. Our study contributes to IS literature by advancing research on human-AI collaboration as well as the ongoing debate on GenAI design.
