Abstract
MeToo is a social movement which has sought to increase societal awareness and reporting of all forms of sexual harassment. The current research looks at the MeToo social movement through the lens of an unintended, albeit desirable market outcome. We evaluate whether female borrowers are funded more quickly on a peer-to-peer platform post MeToo. Our preliminary results find that loans for women borrowers are not only funded faster post MeToo but female borrowers are also funded more quickly as the number of MeToo events increase. We address endogeneity concerns by employing a difference-in-difference approach (adopted using negative binomial regressions to the case of a counting dependent variable due to overdispersion in the data). We also incorporate a range of control variables and utilize double machine learning (DML).
