Abstract

This study examines how multinational enterprises deploy artificial intelligence and big data with other resources such as R&D, SGA, and foreign reach to achieve superior globalization performance. Our analysis of a sample of U.S.-based Fortune 1000 firms identifies equifinal configurations that lead to high foreign profits and revenues. Our findings reveal sector-specific digital strategies. In the services sector, AI and big data serve as compensatory mechanisms for firms with limited R&D and SGA investments, while in manufacturing, global reach with R&D and SGA investments remains central. These findings offer actionable insights for multinational enterprises and contribute to theoretical understandings of how digital strategy and transformation unfold through sector-specific configurations of digital technologies, scale, and organizational investment.
