Abstract
Algorithmic control is common in platform-based work in the gig economy. However, there is a notable gap in understanding the impact of algorithmic control on human dignity, particularly within the context of social media influencers (SMI). Grounded in the CARE theory of digital dignity and the emerging literature on algorithmic control, this paper aims to bridge this gap. Specifically, we argue that algorithmic control impacts intrapersonal dignity disequilibrium among SMI via two mediators: affronts to the inherent dignity (in the form of loss of autonomy) and affronts to the earned dignity (in the form of algorithmic sanctions. Intrapersonal dignity disequilibrium in turn triggers SMI to initiate coping and adaptive responses. Our study aims to contribute to understanding the psychological effects of algorithmic control and personal data digitization for SMI. These insights can guide platforms and businesses in supporting the well-being and dignity of individuals in the gig economies.
