Abstract
Artificial intelligence (AI) has become an integral component of organizations. However, many organizations face challenges in effectively integrating AI due to a lack of tailored AI strategies. Despite its increasing importance, the field of AI strategy remains underresearched. This paper addresses this research area by empirically examining the development and implementation of corporate AI strategies. We interviewed experts responsible for AI use case identification and implementation to identify key elements for the successful formulation and implementation of tailored AI strategies. Our findings indicate the significance of three distinct teams (top management, the AI team, and domain-specific AI sub-teams) for the deployment of AI. We delineate their roles and responsibilities, emphasizing a collaborative approach that evolves iteratively with organizational AI experience. Our study contributes by providing empirical insights into the dynamic and multifaceted nature of AI strategy development, offering guidance for organizations navigating the complexities of AI integration.
