Description
Social movement organizations (SMOs) are a critical driving factor of social movement protests. SMOs motivate participation in movements and organize social movement activities such as protests. We use traditional lexicon-based model VADER and the state-of-the-art deep learning model ChatGPT to measure the sentiment perceived in the specific domain of tweets from SMOs. This study further examines the role of sentiments in mobilizing participants in social movements’ offline protests from January 2014 to December 2021. We find that social movement organizations tweeting with positive and negative sentiments mobilize more protests and participants.
