Abstract

AI has emerged as a transformative force in contemporary business, enabling greater automation and augmenting organizational value creation. However, research on the development of AI capabilities remains limited. This study investigates AI capabilities as a novel form of IS capabilities, focusing on the development mechanisms in organizational context. Through a case study, we delineate a cyclical process consisting of five stages of AI capability development, which dynamically interact with organizational AI resources. Leveraging AI capabilities enables businesses to enhance value creation by fostering agility, efficiency, and resilience. Our findings emphasize the importance of developing AI capabilities for effective AI management, distinguishing AI capabilities from traditional IS capabilities, and demonstrating the significant impact on driving business value through leveraging AI capabilities.
