Description

This research aims to contribute a new theorizing approach in IS/HCI research in the Big Data era. It develops the “related-query aided theorizing approach” (RATA), which uses online search queries for understanding what people are interested in about a technology. This research describes the process of RATA in detail and demonstrates its process and major utilities in the iPhone context, using user search data for major editions of the iPhone from 2008 to 2021. This research shows that RATA can capture fast-changing user interests about a technology and facilitate conceptualization of high-level constructs and testing relationships among constructs. Although limited in several ways, RATA offers opportunities for IS/HCI research to develop in vivo theories about what people are interested in about a technology. Several new directions are discussed to further expand and strengthen RATA.
