Abstract

Being a researcher can be hard. Even under ideal conditions, completing a PhD is demanding and can become a physical and psychological burden (Levecque et al., 2017). In recent years, however, the situation for PhD candidates and researchers at all career stages has grown increasingly difficult. Geopolitical tensions have created new forms of uncertainty. Some colleagues feel unsafe travelling to the United States; others were forced to spend a night at an international airport following last year’s incidents in Jordan, where the European Conference on Information Systems was hosted. Such events are not abstract headlines but lived experiences that shape how and whether scholars participate in the global research community.
