Abstract

The rapid evolution of digital technologies has been reshaping businesses and creating new challenges and opportunities for organizations. In this context, the Chief Information Officer (CIO) has become pivotal in aligning Information Systems (IS) initiatives with organizational goals. With the growing importance of the CIO as the head of the Information Systems Function, it is essential to understand how their functions and competencies are evolving to address new realities and challenges. We conducted an exploratory study across four heterogeneous organizations to examine the current profiles of their CIOs. Findings reveal that CIOs require, more than ever, a broad range of socio‑technical knowledge, skills, and competencies to perform their functions effectively.
