Abstract

Prior research shows that value, habit automaticity, and perceived usefulness are influential factors in households' continuous use of Information Systems (IS). However, certain IS are only needed at specific times. One type is rent-condition documenting IS that is only needed when a product or service is rented (e.g., car, property). Infrequent use is a core impediment, limiting the applicability of traditional factors. In this study, we aim to understand the factors that influence households’ use of rent-condition documentation IS in the rental market. We tasked 118 participants with documenting the conditions of their rental properties. Findings indicate that the IS is valuable and useful, intended for continuous use. However, significant differences emerged between renters and owners of rental properties regarding their willingness to pay, with owners being more willing to pay than renters. Future work seeks to comprehensively test and theorize infrequent but valuable IS.

Infrequent Use Of Information Systems: Combating The Crisis In The Rental Market
