Abstract

A Delphi study is presented, a sequel to a preceding interpretive exploration that revealed quintessential professional responsibilities, competencies, and specialized roles integral to the position of Chief Information Officer (CIO). Specifically, the precursor study, grounded in the narratives of 30 CIOs, unveiled 14 responsibility areas, eight core competencies, and five specialized roles key for navigating the multifaceted realm of IS/IT strategic leadership in today’s organizations. The ensuing Delphi study, to be undertaken in three iterative rounds with the collaboration of industry CIOs, will refine and corroborate preliminary findings by assimilating expert reflections and insights. The study will explore the relevance, significance, and practicality of each responsibility area, competency, and role in the contemporary, post-pandemic era, delving into the prevailing challenges encumbering CIOs. The insights derived will offer a nuanced understanding of the strategic prerequisites for IS/IT leadership, aligning with the dynamic organizational paradigms of the new normal.
