Abstract

This study examines the temporal dynamics of toxic behavior in online gaming by integrating victim-converted aggression and perpetration-driven aggression perspectives. Using a three-wave within-person panel design, we apply a Random Intercept Cross-Lagged Panel Model (RI-CLPM) to distinguish perceptual displacement from behavioral stability. Results indicate that toxic behavior demonstrates significant short-term temporal continuity, whereas perceived toxicity does not predict subsequent toxic enactment. These findings suggest that toxic behavior is better characterized by within-person behavioral stability rather than displacement from perceived victimization. The study advances understanding of aggression dynamics in online environments and offers implications for managing toxicity in online gaming communities.
