Abstract
Artificial intelligence is increasingly introduced into collaborative work settings, often under the assumption that team members will actively use available AI tools. This mixed-methods longitudinal study explores the phenomenon of AI non-adoption that emerged during an online team collaboration project. Forty-five participants worked in small teams over ten weeks, with two conditions receiving AI-bots and one control condition without AI. Quantitative measures assessed trust in the AI-bots, and team trust across multiple time points, while qualitative reflection reports provided in-depth insights into experiences and perceptions of the participants. Results indicate that actual AI usage was low, independent of the experimental condition. Exploratory analyses reveal several key reasons for non-adoption, including that the AI-bot was not perceived as useful. The findings highlight that the mere presence of AI-bots in teams does not guarantee its use and emphasize the importance of aligning AI’s capabilities and integration with human expectations and collaborative norms.
