Abstract
Cyberbullying becomes increasingly prevalent with the rise of social networking sites (SNS). Unlike individual SNS cyberbullying, in which a single user targets a victim, collective SNS cyberbullying involves multiple individuals or groups targeting a victim. This collective form is more consequential, yet we know little about this phenomenon and its underlying mechanisms. Drawing on sociotechnical systems perspective, we propose that collective SNS cyberbullying emerges from the interplay between social influence processes in the social system and SNS-based opportunism in the technical system. We contribute to the literature on cyberdeviance and inform interventions aimed at improving digital well-being.
