Abstract

Psychological ownership of IT (POIT) has been studied as a static antecedent. This paper proposes that POIT evolves across three stages: initial adoption, continued use, and habitual use. We develop a longitudinal model where POIT transitions from an antecedent of use to a consequence of routinized use. We provide falsifiable criteria for testing causal inversion, specify boundary conditions, and identify cognitive offloading as the underlying mechanism. A three-wave design (T1=2–4 weeks, T2=8 weeks, T3=24 weeks) using cross-lagged panel modeling is proposed. Contributions include a dynamic theory of POIT and practical guidance for project managers.
