Abstract
As personal data collection expands, consumers increasingly weigh privacy risks when adopting service technologies. This study argues that perceived information request – users’ perceptions of the scope and intrusiveness of requested personal data and permitted uses - is a proximal driver of privacy concerns. We test this claim with a randomized, scenario-based behavioral experiment using a crossover design that manipulates objective request scope for profile information and behavioral/third-party sharing information. Survey measures capture perceived request intensity, privacy concerns, and adoption intention. Results indicate that higher perceived information request significantly elevates privacy concerns and, through privacy concerns, lowers adoption intention. Privacy awareness and computer experience exhibit additional, secondary effects. The findings highlight information request as a manipulable design lever and offer implications for privacy research and service practice.
