Abstract

Current global identity systems operate predominantly through centralized architectures. While these identity systems have enabled unprecedented financial inclusion, their centralized data repositories create vulnerabilities. The concentration of billions of records in centralized systems represents a high-value target for cyberattacks and a systemic privacy risk. Self-sovereign identity (SSI) represents a fundamentally different paradigm. SSI is a decentralized approach to issuing, holding, and verifying credentials that empowers individuals to possess and control their digital identity. The case of DigiYatra, an ecosystem spanning multiple independent organizations (airports, airlines, government agencies) operating in a highly regulated capital asset sector, is uniquely suited to understand SSI implementation. The case offers an essential step toward understanding how decentralized identity systems can be implemented at scale within highly regulated public service environments. As civil aviation systems worldwide confront escalating security, privacy, and throughput demands, this research examines how SSI architectures reframe conventional assumptions about digital identity management.
