Abstract
Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) is transforming societal and organizational structures at an unprecedented scale. As employers increasingly integrate these technologies and new job roles are being created, US universities are adapting their program offerings to meet changing workforce demands. This research methodologically explores the GenAI technical skills gaps in higher education by comparing technical requirements from a sample of recent job postings from career websites with those taught in US-based AI programs and certifications. We found that although the universities are doing a commendable job at addressing the Gen-AI technical skills gap by incorporating new content in their existing courses, starting new courses, and GenAI certifications; there are certain technical skills (such as Go, Scala, AWS, and API security) that may need to be emphasized along with others more traditional ones (like SQL, R, and Tableau), to better prepare their students to be part of the GenAI bandwagon.
