Abstract

Generative Artificial Intelligence (Gen AI) is changing the future of work, perhaps serving as a double-edged sword, bringing both benefits and costs. These benefits and costs are not evenly distributed among workplace stakeholders. For example, researchers and publishers each face distinct costs and benefits from researchers’ use of Gen AI, prompting many publishers to enact novel Gen AI policies. These policies change the incentive structure to preserve the quality and rigor of each publisher. However, the complexity of the incentive structure, the diverse ways Gen AI can augment and automate our work, and the difficulty of detecting Gen AI provoke the question: What effect are publishers’ Gen AI policies having on researchers’ use of Gen AI? In this study, our main goal is to examine the role that publishers’ and journals’ Gen AI policies play in various outcome variables, such as research quality, research novelty, and researcher productivity.
