Abstract
Since the inception of the cellular wireless network in the 1980s, each generational transition continues to deliver substantial gains in throughput, latency, and connection density, culminating in the current 5G deployment and the emerging 6G technologies. These performance gains come at the rising cost of energy and material consumption and unintended impact on society, promoting concern about sustainability. Thus, the EU-funded 6G VERSUS (6G Vertical Trials for Sustainability) project, which is driving 6G innovation, has made it a priority to create an impact on sustainability and society across Europe. Hence, the paper suggests civic integration into the 6G VERSUS sustainability assessment framework. Such a framework will allow impact evaluation across environmental, social, and economic dimensions, through a set of pre-determined Key-Value-Indicators and Key-Performance-Indicators, which will be applied on six pilots across Europe, where qualitative and quantitative evidence will be gathered.
