Abstract
Content moderation is a central but controversial practice on digital platforms. While moderation aims to reduce harmful content and improve user experience, it is often criticized for limiting free expression. This ERF paper presents a structured review of the content moderation literature, synthesizing findings from 67 peer-reviewed articles. We identify key themes, theoretical perspectives, and methodological approaches in prior research and highlight gaps that suggest opportunities for future inquiry. By consolidating existing knowledge, this paper seeks to inform future research in the field of content moderation.
