Abstract

Since the 1980s, the critical paradigm in the management of information systems (MIS) has been structured internationally as a counter to positivist and techno-centric approaches. Its evolution within the French community has been largely understudied. This paper provides a historical analysis of critical research in MIS, drawing on a corpus of 908 communications presented at AIM conferences from 2014 to 2024. The study identifies two phases of transition: the first phase (2014-2020) is characterized by multidisciplinary influences, while the second phase (2021-2024) is marked by a consolidation of identity. The recent emergence of AI-related issues appears to signify a pivotal moment in the evolution of critical approaches, aligning with digital ethical considerations. Our results underscore the urgent need to further structure this paradigm to effectively address contemporary IS challenges and broaden the role of critical perspectives in Francophone research.

Exploring the Critical Paradigm in French MIS Research: A Trajectory from Multidisciplinarity to Autonomization (2014-2024)
