Systems analysis involves examining business problems (i.e., opportunities) and identifying possible solutions; systems design includes the identification, specification, development or creation, and implementation of an information technology solution. The combined field of Systems Analysis and Design (SAND), which has been a foundational domain since the earliest days of information systems development, deals with all issues related to the development of systems.
SAND remains of central importance to the Information Systems discipline, including understanding how businesses can create value with new digital technologies. In particular, information technologies have become a part of our everyday lives at both the personal and professional levels. Our organizations are being transformed as technologies become increasingly prevalent and embedded in our workplaces, vehicles, homes, and personal space. How and where we work is rapidly evolving through virtual connections, real-time or asynchronous interactions, as well as traditional work configurations. And the individual effects of these evolving IT capabilities hold the promise of positive impact while also acknowledging the potential negative effects of social media, the demands for our attention and reaction(s), and the always-online capabilities and expectations.
