Abstract

This study conducts a systematic literature review to identify and categorize the essential technical competencies required for IT project management. A total of 22 peer-reviewed studies were analyzed, identifying 37 key technical competencies, including project charter development, project management planning, scope management, and proficiency with project management tools. The findings indicate that structured scope management prevents scope creep, project management planning reduces uncertainty, and the strategic use of project management tools enhances efficiency and decision-making. Despite their significance, technical competencies remain underutilized in practice, with inconsistent adoption across industries. The study highlights the need for further research on integrating AI-driven analytics into project management methodologies to improve forecasting, adaptability, and overall project success. These insights contribute to a deeper understanding of the role of technical competencies in IS/IT project management and offer practical recommendations for enhancing project success rates.
