Abstract
The convergence of artificial intelligence (AI) and the metaverse transforms educational systems, creating immersive, interactive, and personalized learning environments. While traditional online education often lacks engagement and experiential depth, AI-powered virtual tutors and adaptive learning systems address these challenges by offering real-time feedback and customized learning experiences. Simultaneously, metaverse-based platforms enable students to engage in 3D simulations, historical reconstructions, and AI-driven language practice. However, research on integrating generative AI, like ChatGPT, into educational metaverse settings remains limited. This study addresses this gap by exploring factors influencing AI implementation in metaverse-based learning. Utilizing 22 semi-structured expert interviews, we apply the Community of Inquiry (CoI) framework to identify key drivers of AI adoption, categorized into cognitive, social, and teaching presence. Our findings propose 14 critical factors shaping AI integration, offering guidelines for sustainable implementation. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of AI’s role in the educational metaverse and its future potential.
