Abstract
SMEs in main construction and finishing trade (CAB) are essential for Germany’s construction industry yet struggling with digitalization. Despite the opportunity to create new value in this area only one interviewed platform provider of a former research had the educational background of a master craftsman in CAB. In this paper we characterized 48 platforms and their 68 entrepreneurs in different features. One finding is that most platforms provide their services as order procurement or operations management platforms both tackling challenges in the value creation process of planning and coordination within the organization and in cooperation with others. Considering the entrepreneurs, only three of them have a CAB apprenticeship background. Despite doing the physical work they barely participate in digital value creation. However, there are still enough opportunities in the platform market as entrepreneurs use the benefit of their knowledge about their own field.
