Abstract

Intelligent technologies, including artificial intelligence, algorithms, and analytics, are becoming increasingly integral to knowledge work. While these technologies offer various benefits, such as enhanced decision-making capabilities, existing literature also warns of potential drawbacks, such as privacy invasions and job displacement. To better understand the impact of intelligent technologies on knowledge work, this study employs a grounded theory approach. Through an exploratory study involving 17 semi-structured interviews with knowledge workers in the technology industry across various hierarchical levels, we built a framework to shed light on the applications, potential benefits, and challenges introduced by intelligent technologies in the workplace. This framework encompasses four key areas: performance monitoring and evaluation, knowledge creation, workflow efficiency, and communication. Our research provides valuable insights for knowledge workers to understand how to effectively integrate intelligent technologies into their work practices, striking a balance between harnessing the benefits of these tools and mitigating their potential adverse effects.
