Abstract

The advent of ChatGPT has catalyzed a significant increase in the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools into everyday activities, sparking controversial arguments surrounding its positive and negative impact. This study investigates the impact of the launch of ChatGPT on individuals' sentiments towards artificial intelligence (AI). Utilizing Twitter data from July 2022 to March 2023, we employ a Difference-in-Differences (DiD) approach to analyze individuals’ emotional shifts before and after the introduction of ChatGPT as a disruptive technology. The findings indicate a significant increase in negative emotions and tones towards AI following its launch. Specifically, individuals exhibit heightened concerns and fears regarding AI's potential negative consequences, such as job displacement and ethical dilemmas. The findings underscore the need for policymakers and AI developers to address public apprehensions and promote a positive perception of AI advancements.
