Description

Despite the importance of EA that addresses the problems of fragmented IT systems, academic research could not provide compelling empirical evidence of the business value of EA and prescriptive design principles. We argue the lack of strong empirical evidence is partly and importantly due to the complexity of EA and the limitations of the correlation-based methods used for uncovering the complex dynamics in heterogeneous EA configurations. This research intends to examine how EA design factors combine with organizational and environmental elements to produce high organizational performance and to suggest ways to design effective EA configurations. We propose that it is the holistic dynamics of EA that determine the impact of EA on organizational performance. Using fsQCA, an emerging set-theoretic configurational methodology, we discover emergent patterns of effective EA configurations, and develop EA design principles in terms of four EA design factors such as centralization, modularity, standardization, and open platforms.
