Description

This 90-minute professional development symposium is organized and presented by SIG Social Inclusion. The purpose is to facilitate interactive engagement with an audience of IS educators about ways to incorporate social inclusion content and sensibilities into the information systems curricula. Audience members are not expected to have any particular background in social inclusion research or pedagogy. In advance of the symposium, interested participants will be able to submit abstracts for courses (currently taught or proposed to be taught) that would incorporate social inclusion. The session will begin with a short introduction to the workshop, a rationale for the value of incorporating social inclusion into IS pedagogy, and ways of doing so. The participants will then engage in roundtable discussion groups, with a facilitator assigned to each group. Groups will be organized around themes such as: social inclusion as an entire course, social inclusion as a topic in an IS course, teaching IS subject matter with a social inclusion sensibility, curriculum focusing on a specific type of social inclusion such as gender or disability, etc. The last portion of the PDS will be devoted to summaries from each roundtable group, followed by closing comments from the PDS presenters.
