Description

Improving healthcare is often viewed as the simultaneous pursuit of what is referred to as the “Triple Aim”. The Triple Aim includes the pursuit of: improving the experience of care, improving population health, and reducing healthcare costs. Health information systems (HIS) have tremendous potential to help address the triple aim. The HIS field has a unique opportunity to learn from and extend information systems research to influence practice and policy. As a result, this article presents a review of 126 HIS research articles published in the “Senior Scholars” list of the top eight ranked IS academic journals over the 2000-2015 time period. Across the selected journals our findings compare research methodologies, triple aim topics investigated and research trends. Interesting results emerge in the range and evolution of HIS research and opportunities for HIS researchers and practitioners to consider moving forward when addressing the Triple Aim of healthcare.
