Description

Recent technological advances have enabled several new digital business models, which are now transforming industrial-age industries. As the mobility sector is particularly suitable for studying characteristics of this recent digital transformation, prior research has investigated how individual companies from this sector, such as automotive manufacturers, have transformed their business models in accordance with these changes. With our research, we extend this knowledge by conducting a longitudinal study of business models from an industry perspective, namely, that of the mobility sector. We analyzed the business model types employed by US technology startups founded in the past decade. Our results demonstrate that the share of intellectual landlords (e.g., software companies) has significantly decreased, whereas the shares of physical brokers (e.g., P2P car sharing) and contractors (e.g., limousine services) have significantly increased.
